Michael Kadow's journey to religious life was shaped by two powerful forces: the witness of dedicated Brothers and the values instilled by his family. Growing up, the Brothers at Roncalli High School in Manitowoc, Wisconsin — where he studied from 1972 to 1976 — modeled a life of faith, service, and genuine engagement with students. Combined with his family's own commitment to compassion and service, these influences planted the seeds of his vocation.
Among the many Brothers who shaped him, Brother Michael Callahan stands out as a particular inspiration. A senior Brother who embodied the spirit of lifelong learning, Callahan was always willing to explore new ideas and take on different experiences — and his readiness to serve never waned. That same spirit showed up in Brother Denis Murphy, whose concern and advocacy for the poor was translated into action through networking with local organizations to bring about real, positive change in the community.
When asked what he would wish for the next generation, Br. Michael's answer is characteristically generous: the common good. He hopes that young people might come to see everyone — not as a stranger with suspicious intent, but as a potential friend or ally. He draws inspiration from creation itself, pointing to its beauty and wisdom as a model for human flourishing. And if he could give students one gift, it would be the encouragement to live out Catholic Social Teaching — to let faith shape not just Sunday mornings, but the whole of one's life.
The Senior Brothers have always inspired Br. Michael. Their willingness to learn, try new things, and continue to serve, he says, is "a true blessing."
